A “sigil” is a symbol that represents a specific desire, goal, or ambition that you’d like to bring into your reality. If you look at the world around you, you can find them everywhere, mostly being used by corporations and businesses. Even though sigils are powerful tools, it’s important to understand that there’s nothing inherently supernatural about them. They simply give a concrete form to our desires and intentions.

It’s a fancy way of saying “symbolic drawing.” They can be used by anyone, and they don’t replace anything in your life, spiritual practice, or belief system. They merely add more dimension to what you already know.

History of the Sigil

The word sigil is derived from the Latin word sigillum, which means seal. It is also thought to be related to the Hebrew word segula (סגולה0), meaning word, action, talisman, or item that has a spiritual effect. In the darker, medieval times when ceremonial magic was being practiced, the term sigil referred to the occult signs that that represented various angels and demons, which the practitioner might summon. These sigils were considered to be equivalent to the true name of the spirit, and thus granted the practitioner a measure of control over these beings!

In modern uses, the concept of the sigil was made popular by Austin Osman Spare. After publishing the method of reducing words of a statement into an abstract design, and charging it with one’s will and intent, the technique would become known as sigilization and become a core element of chaos magic.

How does Sigil Magic work exactly?

As mentioned before our subconscious mind is extremely powerful! But what most don’t know is that our subconscious mind isn’t the best at understanding English. Instead, it understands basic communication, like our emotions and images. (Just think of all the images you’ve associated with corporations or brands) When we have a thought or emotion that makes us feel bad, and we accept either as truth, our subconscious mind will continue to create circumstances that match our belief. Affirmations (the act of repeating a statement over and over) have the same effect because after a while it begins to create a feeling within us. If affirmation is a positive one, we will see the positive effects show up in our lives! If the affirmations are negative, however, the results showing up in our lives will be the same, until we can learn to reprogram our subconscious mind by changing the core belief.

Sigil magic short circuits our affirmations into a simplified version that our subconscious mind can recognize instantly. The trick is not to keep digging up the “sigil seed” once it’s been planted! It needs to take root, and be allowed to grow, which can’t happen if we’re doubting, questioning, or thinking about its ability to grow. Think of our conscious and subconscious minds like a garden, with the conscious mind being the top part of the soil, where we can see the blossoms of all the beautiful things we’ve planted. But we know that the roots go all the way down into the depths of the soil (our subconscious), and this is why it’s so hard to get rid of any unruly weeds that may be choking the plants at the top.
